Artist Statement
I began sewing as a small boy using an antique Singer machine to make little cushions for my Star Wars people. Largely self-taught, over the years I have endeavoured to make a wide variety of fabric crafts and garments. I took my first quilting class in 2014. Although I favour making traditional quilts using precise patterns, I have pushed myself to try using more modern colours and techniques, including raw-edge appliqué and improvisational curved piecing. Typically drawn to more masculine fabrics and prints, anything grey, purple, green, or with a moustache on it, makes me exceedingly happy.
This quilt is my entry for the Pins and Pine Needles Quilt Guild 2020 Charity Challenge. Each of us were given a fat quarter (the white with coloured specks) and asked to make a baby quilt. My challenge was to use squares and add blue fabric. The Baby Lattice Quilt by Amy Smart has become one of my go-to quilts whenever a friend has a baby on the way, as the project can be completed over a weekend. The name of the quilt honours the song “Sailing on the Tide” by the Carpenters.
